Flat-free tires

Help eliminate headaches and down time

By Dennis Evers

Not a good way to start the chores, but not an uncommon problem with standard tubed and tubeless tires.

Changing the tires takes all of two minutes. Simply remove one of the axle brackets, slip off the old tire and install the new one. Reinstall and you will never have a flat again.

The Carefree tires have quality sealed bearings and a grease fitting, a nice touch for longevity if you don't mind putting a grease gun to it every spring.

The only thing more frustrating than a flat tire is having to take the time out of a busy schedule to fix it. While flats aren’t uncommon, particularly in rough country, most new wheelbarrow and garden cart tires are paper-thin imports. While you can add an aerosol or liquid flat fix, they often leak out as well over time, and when you do need to patch the tire, the inside is full of crud and the valve stem is often plugged.

When we opened up the ranch’s new backup generator, we noticed it came with a really cool set of solid knobby tires. Obviously capable of handling comparable loads to their pneumatic counterparts, the tires looked identical to some air-filled tires on a weed burner, with the exception of the missing air valve. My first thought was these would be great on all of our terminally flat wheelbarrows.

After some searching, several sources for affordable solid wheelbarrow tires were located, and to make things even better, we found they were also available in ribbed, knobby and smooth treads for garden carts, hand trucks, mowers and numerous other applications.

Flat-free tires are made of lightweight, micro-cellular polyurethane, have the feel of a regular tire and are a snap to change. They come already mounted on a steel wheel and all that’s required is to measure the axle diameter and the wheel size, including the width of the axle shaft. If you’re not sure, Marathon Industries offers numerous tires including a universal wheelbarrow tire kit that includes different bearings and shims that can be configured to cover 95% of all wheelbarrows. Carefree Tires not only offers wheelbarrow tires, but flat-free riding mower and utility tires as well. Tricam offers wheelbarrow tires and a line of garden carts replete with flat proof tires, so with a little research, chances are you can find a flat free tire for whatever you own that barrows, mows or hauls.

Compared to a high quality tire and tube, flat free tires are really quite a bargain. They come with a steel rim and unless you put a ton of highway mileage on your tools, flat-free tires should provide years of trouble free service without even the slightest possibility of a flat!

The ranch’s wheelbarrows are now sporting new flat-proof tires, and given the amount of time we’ve spent in the past fixing flats, we should now have a little more time to enjoy horsing around.
